Gustav Nyquist Is Fitting In With The San Jose Sharks
Gustav Nyquist has been really good for the San Jose Sharks. Traded from Detroit at the trade deadline, he’s made an impact on his new team already. Will Nyquist be the piece the Sharks need to win the Stanley Cup?
The 29-year-old Nyquist is having the best season of his career. Going from Detroit to powerhouse, San Jose, he’s shown many across the NHL that he’s a solid team player Nyquist has played on lines with Tomas Hertl, Timo Meier, Logan Couture, and Jonas Donskoi, having little problem finding chemistry with all of them.
Since Nyquist’s arrival in San Jose, he’s compiled 3 goals and 2 assists in 10 games. That doesn’t equate to much on paper. Considering he was kept off the stat sheet for his first 3 games, that’s actually mighty impressive. The Nyquist-Hertl-Donskoi line has produced 2 goals, while the Nyquist-Hertl-Meier line has also produced 2 goals.
Keep in mind these numbers, while not too impressive, have come with Nyquist not knowing his teammates’ strengths. He’s yet to play more than 10 games with his new team. Seeing the chemistry he has now, there’s a lot of hope for him going into the playoffs.
Nyquist has been more of a passer in his career than a goal scorer. He’s not the flashiest player and has yet to score 60 points in a season. When Nyquist left Detroit he had 49 points. Including the 5 from San Jose, he should go over that 60 mark this season. And it’s possible he adds a Stanley Cup to that as well.
San Jose isn’t playing at full strength. Erik Karlsson has been out for a few weeks. When he returns, the Sharks are one of, if not the, best teams in the league. Nyquist and Karlsson are both from Sweeden. Having him on the lines will only add to Nyquist’s confidence.
The San Jose Sharks are one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Nyquist was brought in to add depth to the roster. The team’s plan has worked thus far. Given some more time with teammates, we might see a lot more out of Nyquist.
