Halloween: Best Horror Movies Part 1 – A Nightmare On Elm Street

Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare On Elm Street

Now that Halloween is right around the corner, it’s that time of year to explore what really matters. What horror franchise is the best to watch around the holiday. Whether it’s the classic horror franchises or some of the newer ones, we’re running through the list of the best horror movies of all time starting with the classic A Nightmare On Elm Street.

A Nightmare on Elm Street has been a staple of the horror genre since 1984. Wes Craven created a masterpiece of scary movies with the iconic Freddy Krueger, a serial killer who attacked his victims where they were the most vulnerable and unprotected, in their sleep. From the terrifying stalker of your nightmares, Freddy would evolve into a snarky, condescending, yet still horrifying  killer. Not only did he torment victims with his stalking nature that kept their head on a swivel, his weapon of choice was a glove with knives for fingers. His victims were not only tormented by psychological torture, their deaths wouldn’t be painless.

But that’s not the most horrifying thing about Freddy Kruger. Unlike other characters in the horror genre, Freddy can’t die. He can be stopped temporarily, but a killer who attacks his victim in his sleep is a part of their subconscious. As long as someone somewhere remembers him, he’ll always be passed on to the next generation of victims. No matter how hard people try, unless all memory of his existence can be erased from history, he’s always going to survive.

What made A Nightmare On Elm Street so horrifying was literally the stuff of nightmares. The chilling nursery rhyme “1.. 2 .. Freddy’s coming for you”, to the slogan “every town has it’s Elm Street”, to the helplessness of not being able to fight off a killer who attacks in your sleep. Freddy Kruger was the definition of vulnerability. The fact that franchise has been around since the 80s and established itself as a cultural icon puts it towards the top of our horror list. To establish a character so frightful, with an actor so iconic that a recast is next to impossible, A Nightmare On Elm Street will forever be a Halloween classic.
