Washington Nationals: Bryce Harper’s future will be a highlight of the Winter Meetings
As the MLB winter meetings are set to begin on Monday, there’s a few players that fans need to watch for. One of them happen to be Bryce Harper. Prior to the offseason, the feeling was that Harper was going to both be a hot commodity and command a lot of money. One of the teams that people expected to be in the Harper sweepstakes was his former team, the Washington Nationals. However, principal owner Mark Lerner had some interesting comments on a local radio station on Friday.
After the team had introduced newly signed pitcher, Patrick Corbin. The host asked Mark Lerner about where the team stands regarding Harper. If you recall, the Nationals did offer Harper a 10 year deal that would have made him $300 million. He would end up turning it down. Now it seems that the Nationals won’t go above that mark. In addition, it now seems that the team has moved on. One reason for this sudden move is that the team may not have enough money to offer him the deal. They have a lot of money invested in Patrick Corbin, Stephen Strasburg, and Max Scherzer. In addition, they called up someone from triple-a last year who is good.
Another team that people thought Harper would go to is the Chicago Cubs. He is friends with Kris Bryant. However, the Cubs are at their limit of spending and would need to have magic to pull that off. There is feeling that the LA Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Philadelphia Phillies may be interested. In addition, the New York Mets have not ruled out the possibility of signing Harper. While I find the Mets not being the likely ones to land the superstar, I can’t rule it out just yet. The Winter Meetings will be interesting this season.
