Horror Movies: Should Studios Adopt Disney Origin Tales
Disney has been know to be the height of fantasy, magic, and imagination when it comes to movies. They’ve taken the damsel in distress and turned her into the strong and powerful feel-good stories. But what most don’t know is that these movies are much darker when it comes to their source material.

While we fun and carefree sing-alongs that Disney has committed to, it would be nice for a studio to invest in the darker sides of these stories. Horror movies are on the rise again and whether it was box office or streaming, getting these tales in their true form would lend to the popularity of the horror genre. Not just one or two dark adaptation either, they should tie in every single dark fairy tale there is.
Take, for instance, the movie Frozen. It’s based on a darker tale The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen:
“The devil, in the form of an evil troll, has made a magic mirror that distorts the appearance of everything that it reflects. The magic mirror fails to reflect the good and beautiful aspects of people and things, and magnifies their bad and ugly aspects. The devil, who is headmaster at a troll school, takes the mirror and his pupils throughout the world, delighting in using it to distort everyone and everything. They attempt to carry the mirror into heaven in order to make fools of the angels and God, but the higher they lift it, the more the mirror shakes as they laugh, and it slips from their grasp and falls back to earth, shattering into billions of pieces, some no larger than a grain of sand. The splinters are blown by the wind all over the Earth and get into people’s hearts and eyes, freezing their hearts like blocks of ice and making their eyes like the troll-mirror itself, seeing only the bad and ugly in people and things.”
More Entertainment: Should DC Create Prequel Universe
Imagine that story in a dark universe with more of a horror element and it feels like we’re missing out on the fun stuff. A large portion of the Disney stories are old stories from the Brothers Grimm in their Grimm Fairy Tales. Cinderella for that matter, in the Disney version we get happily ever after, but in the original one of the evil stepsisters cuts her toe and heel off to fit in the glass slipper to marry the prince.
In the original story for The Little Mermaid, Ariel never goes on to marry the prince and he marries someone else. The Sea Witch tries to kill her former would-be groom in order to save herself, but instead, she chooses to sacrifice herself.
Disney probably would find ways to make sure these films never came to light and preserve their magic. However, if people are stuck on the same horror films like Paranormal Activity style movies or another Saw there are darker tales that could be told. Netflix should take a heavy interest in building its horror fan base with movies that would write themselves.

The hardest part of converting these into their horror origins is falling into the cheesy horror trap. Without the right amount of effort put in, they come off as cheesy knockoffs of their Disney counterparts. The market for horror is there with these origin stories. Is there a streamer out there brave enough to make it happen?
