House Of The Dragon: Game Of Thrones Prequel Takes Us Back

Very few shows reach the success that Game of Thrones did. The HBO hit based on George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series blew up to the pleasure of audiences and critics alike. Now that the series is over, HBO is trying to capitalize on another book from that universe Fire & Blood. House of the Dragon takes us back to Westeros to dive deeper into the events of GoT long before the days of White Walkers.

From HBO:

The reign of House Targaryen begins: House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, is here. Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen.

Paddy Considine (HBO’s The Third Day and The Outsider), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint (It’s a SinDoctor Who), Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel and Rhys Ifans to star. Additional cast members include Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, and Savannah Steyn. However, after being burned by the finale of the original series, die-hard fans might be slow to dive back into another HBO series after the massic letdown. However, something about House of the Dragon brought enough of the show back to what it should be. While audiences might slowly dip their toes back into the water, House of the Dragon appears to pick up the highs that fans came to love.

There are plenty of characters who fans could come to love or hate. The writers hold nothing back on some gruesome violence that sets the tone and tempo for the show’s more significant moments. Of course, because of the House Targaryen, there are plenty of dragons. Not to mention the fact that there are many connections to the original characters in the early days of Game of Thrones that fans will have to listen closely for. The hardest part of watching this series will be following along to remember what houses each allegiance had and how the history will unfold. Each character will be strategically placed to fit their future stories while simultaneously having their story unfold. How will Game of Thrones shape these characters’ backstories and keep them on the path we know they’re already headed?

The fact that the series is already based off a book will help. However, unlike Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is currently one book whereas GoT was based on 5. Despite that hangup, Fire & Blood spans a much larger timeframe of the Targaryen rule. Showrunners will have their work cut out for them while they try to stay true to each character. While that is yet to be seen, the good news is House of the Dragon is much closer to the first four seasons of Game of Thrones than the last four.
