House Of The Dragon: Who Are The Good/Bad Guys?

House of the Dragon Poster

When it comes to Game of Thrones, there are characters we love, characters we hate, and characters we love to hate. The same can be said of the prequel, House of the Dragon. The original series made it very clear who the protagonists and antagonists were, but the newer series clouds the water a little bit. Despite their being fan favorites, it appears no one will come out smelling like roses.

House of the Dragon tells the story of the demise of the Targaryen rule. Ultimately it leads us to the story of how the dragons disappeared from Westeros. Leveling the playing field paved the way for a new king. Hop, skip, and jump from Robert’s Rebellion and the coming events on GoT.

Rewinding to the events of House of the Dragon, the coming civil war, and the claim to the Iron Throne no one involved is without corruption. There are the Greens (the Hightower alliance if you will.) Who acted quickly with the death of the queen to align themselves in a position of power. Otto Hightower, as the hand of the king, puts his family’s foot in the door convincing the king to marry his daughter (Allicent) and offering up a male heir to the throne.

Allicent gives off some strong Cersei Lannister vibes and looks to keep her upper hand at any cost. Then there’s the true heir, the king’s daughter Rhaenyra who is just as wicked in her ways. While she seems like she’s on the side of good, she’s playing a dirty game. She also has an uncanny knack for lying, cheating, and stealing her way to the top. We see this in the relationship with her uncle Daemon.

Daemon Targaryen is the wild card. The show paints him as the villain but for some reason, you just can’t hate him. No matter what he does, there’s that little hope in him that he walks away the victor.

No matter who your favorite character is so far, House of the Dragon isn’t as clear on the good/bad guy. The fall of the Targaryens shows more of how power corrupts and when two sides can’t come together it leads to the downfall of both sides. We’ll see each at their best and each at their worst, but in the end, there will be no victory on either side.
