Houston Texans: Is Tyrod Taylor The Short-Term Answer For The Texans?

Houston Texans QB Tyrod Taylor

With all the dramatics over star quarterback Deshaun Watson, it became hard to keep up with the rest of the Houston Texans. Surely the QB controversy just to start the offseason was enough but when you throw in the off-field stuff as well, it could’ve been a huge distraction. Luckily for fans, the Texans pressed on and signed Tyrod Taylor in the offseason.

While Taylor hasn’t had the greatest career so far, he’s consistently competed for starting jobs along the way. After his stint with the Baltimore Ravens, he’d move on to Buffalo where he’d win the starting job but the team never quite got over the hump. He made a brief stop in Cleveland but won the starting spot in Los Angeles until an injury derailed his season giving way to rookie Justin Herbert.

Now he’s in Houston and we have to wonder, after a win this weekend you have to wonder if he can calm the chaos that was the Houston Texans’ offseason. Taylor might not be as talented as Deshaun Watson but his career is just starting in Texas where Watson is on his way out. At 32 years old, he might not be the long-term answer but can he at least make Houston competitive until they find who is?

Yes, its easy to say it was just the Jaguars knowing their struggles as of late, but this is still the NFL and you have to be able to go out and win. Houston wasn’t that much better of a team last season and fans don’t have that room to brag. So Tyrod Taylor going out and throwing 21/33 for 291 yards and 2 TDs is a pretty big deal. The key to his success was playing mistake-free football.

Will it lead to success against the powerhouse teams of the AFC like the Chiefs or dare I say Browns? That much is yet to be seen. However, Taylor has always been on the bubble of being the guy for the bad teams he’s played for. If he can take a Houston Texans team and win more games than Watson did last year this season will be a success. Houston needs a QB of the future but if Taylor goes out and plays well for a season or two, Houston can trade Watson for a high first-round pick and groom both his and Tyrods eventual replacement.
