How I Met Your Father: How They’re Keeping the Secret

How I Met Your Father title card

We waited nine whole seasons to find out who the mother was on How I Met Your Mother. As it turns out, we didn’t know who she was until the second to last season. Now, How I Met Your Father has earned its run and we can’t help but notice there are already some subtle clues to who the father may be.

From IMDB.com

Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.

Despite some nods to the original show, there are already some subtle differences between the two shows. While each has its unique friend group there’s a certain pairing that both seem to have. First, there are the Barney/Charlie and they’re not just similar-sounding names. There’s the rich, pompous, arrogance that has to play down to the friend group in order to fit in. Then there’s the Ted/Sophie connection. The lovestruck, stereotypical, rom-com protagonist who will find love at any cost. Plenty of similarities between the two shows.

The one thing that How I Met Your Father seems to be missing so far is the cutaways that take us through the shenanigans of the friends’ group. These little nuggets further our back story and give deeper insight into the personalities of each character. They were a staple of How I Met Your Father right from the start. But the biggest difference between the two might be the most telling part of the show, the narrator.

When we watch How I Met Your Father, the story is being told by Sophie. In the future, she’s talking to her son and telling him the story of how his parents came to be. While this is similar to How I Met Your Mother, the one thing audiences should focus on is who the camera is on while the story is being told. When future Ted is talking to his son and daughter, the camera is focused on the two of them. When Sophie is talking to her son in the future, the camera remains on her at all times. We never actually get to see the son.

More than likely this was done deliberately to keep the mystery alive. As we’ve already been told we’ve met the father in the series premier, showing the son would tip their hand. How I Met Your Father is keeping the son a secret because any hint of genetics would eliminate some of the qualifying candidates and limit their future stories. The key to the entire show is hidden in the secrecy of Sophie’s son and there’s a good chance we won’t see him until many seasons down the road.
