If Truly Interested, Eagles Need To Pass On Adam Gase

New York Jets NFL Coach Adam Gase

After a disappointing season, the Philadelphia Eagles fired Doug Pederson. Despite him bringing home the franchise’s only Super Bowl victory, his time in Philly would last just 5 seasons. The season isn’t even over yet and the Eagles have already started their search. Rumor has it they’ve been sniffing around Adam Gase and that couldn’t be a bigger mistake.

Take it from a long-time Dolphins fan, he’s not the kind of energy you want in Philly. The once “QB whisperer” quickly made a name for himself, but as of late he’s done nothing worthy of a head coaching gig. While fans and analysts alike will jump on trashing Gase, he really does know a lot about football. That’s his problem though, he knows a lot about football and he knows it. His cocky arrogance will forever hold him back.

Because he knows it, he sticks to his guns, and more often than not, and it can easily frustrate players. Gase’s offenses never have finished out of the bottom 10% in the league. That’s not a very good look for someone who’s supposed to be a guru of offense. There’s no adapting, he’s too by the book, and he sticks to what “should” work.

More NFL: The Jets Hiring Gase Is A Headscratcher

Given his resume as being the guy who can get quarterbacks to the next level, it would make a lot of sense for the Eagles to bring in Gase. Both Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts could use his knowledge to develop into a better caliber of QB. But since taking over as a head coach, he hasn’t proven he’s capable.

As an Offensive Coordinator in Denver, he contributed to one of Peyton Manning’s best season where he’d go on to set multiple records. As a skeptic, you have to wonder how much of that was on Manning as a future Hall of Fame QB. When John Fox would move on to the Bears, he’d bring Gase in as well to be the OC in Chicago as well. Here’s where he actually shined a little elevating the game of struggling Mitch Trubisky. Even then, the Bears’ offense still finished no higher than 18th.

But then he became a head coach with the Miami Dolphins, his lone task was to make Ryan Tannehill a winner. Despite a 10-6 start, his final record as a Dolphins head coach was 23-25 and Ryan Tannehill never developed into a better quarterback. Since taking over in Tennessee, Tannehill has actually taken the Titans to the playoffs in back to back seasons.

More Eagles: Is Philly Ready to Reclaim Their Throne?

Even if you eliminate Tannehill from the equation you have to look at Sam Darnold under Gase as well. Darnold struggled before Gase but seemed to regress with him in charge. Gase was hired again to get a struggling Darnold over the hump. The young QB was just outside of looking like he was a franchise QB to now potentially being out of a job.

If the Eagles want to get to the next level, Gase isn’t the guy who should be considered. If he can’t take being criticized in Miami or New York, he doesn’t need to be an Eagle. Philly has some of the most die-hard and passionate fans. If the Eagles are willing to give up on the coach who brought them a Super Bowl not that long ago, then Adam Gase will be on a very short leash.

Philly needs a guy who’s going to bring a dynamic offense with creativity to the table. The NFC East isn’t filled with powerhouses on defense and an explosive attack ought to run away with the division. Outside of one record-breaking season with Peyton Manning and stud receivers, Gase has never shown he can bring explosiveness to the table. If the Philadelphia Eagles move forward with hiring Adam Gase, look for them the be the basement dwellers of the NFC.
