Impact Wrestling: What’s next for Sami Callihan as the champion
Impact Wrestling has begun their AXS TV this past Tuesday. In the main event, the Machine Brian Cage took on Sami Callihan for the Impact World title. It took a pile driver off the second rope for Callihan to pin Cage and become the new Impact Champion. While he was celebrating, he would get a visit from someone who’s had their problems with Callihan.
Tessa Blanchard made her way to the ring and the show closed out with a stare down between Blanchard and Callihan. These two have had an interesting 2019 as they have been apart one of the top feuds of the year. They were the main event of Slammiversary and had a match to determine the number #1 contender match. However, it seems that Impact Wrestling wants to have Tessa Blanchard make history by winning the top belt in Impact. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Impact Wrestling’s goal with the third generation superstar is to have her win the belt.
If this were to happen, this would make history. This would be the first time since Sexy Star won the Lucha Underground belt were a woman won a major men’s title. In the Attitude Era, the Hardcore and Cruiserweight titles were always being won by women. If there’s anyone who deserves the opportunity to win a major title is Tessa Blanchard. In late 2018, Tessa Blanchard won the Knockouts title in a three way match with Su Yung and Allie. After she dropped it to Taya Valkyrie, it was looking interesting for her. The question was where does she do from here? We would end up getting an answer real soon.
In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, she was asked about the feud with Sami Callihan. It was her idea because she was trained with male wrestlers. In her two singles matches with Sami, they have become match of the year nominees.
If I had to give my prediction to when we see this match, I expect it will be on their January PPV, Hard to Kill. By waiting until January, you allow the story to be told and have fans invested. I don’t see this being on TV because it is such a historical match, even if they pull the trigger and have Tessa win the belt.
