Indianapolis Colts: After an extension, Is It Brissett’s team to lose?
When the Indianapolis Colts lost Peyton Manning to a neck injury it was assumed the star quarterback would never play again. The team would replace him with top talent Andrew Luck.
With Luck battling injury after injury the team eventually traded for New England Patriots backup Jacoby Brissett. With their franchise QB calling it a career it looks like Brissett and the Colts believe they can make a run with him leading the way.
According to Horseshoe Heroes:
“The Colts decided to give Jacoby Brissett a vote of confidence today. They signed him to a two-year extension worth $30 million with $20 million guaranteed. This means that the team is locking in their time with Brissett and giving him a chance.”
That’s not to say that the Indianapolis Colts believe he’s the quarterback of the future but its safe to say they’ve rewarded him for his work ethic and new starting role. A $30 million dollar extension doesn’t scream top quarterback money but it bumps him up a little closer. Luck calling it quits throws Brissett to the wolves and the Colts recognized that.
For now, the Colts have indicated that it’s Jacoby’s team. What other choice do they have. They went from Super Bowl favorites to in the discussion for top pick in the draft next year, an insult to Brissett but let’s face it, he’s not Andrew Luck. He has all the talent around him to make the Colts sustainable, but does he have enough to push them into the playoffs.
By extending Jacoby Brissett the Indianapolis Colts are doing their best to create a bridge the gap quarterback for their future. More than likely they’ll select a rookie in the first or second round of next year’s draft to either push Brissett or replace him. With 20 million guaranteed, it at least keeps him with the team for the next two years. Will he step up or will the Colts be truly out of luck.
