Indianapolis Colts Fire Chuck Pagano After Six Seasons And 53-43 Record
The Indianapolis Colts finished their 4-12 season the only way they could see fit by firing Chuck Pagano. During his tenure in Indianapolis, Pagano went 53-43 coupled with an appearance in the 2014 AFC Championship game. Those would be the best of times for Pagano and the Colts as injuries and inconsistency would shortly settle in.
Pagano could be blamed for much of the Colts issues, however, one must not forget he has coached a team that has relied on a 34-year old Frank Gore and an oft-injured Andrew Luck. In his first three seasons with the Colts, Pagano would lead them to three straight 11-5 seasons as the team attempted to move on from the Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning era.
With Luck at the helm, he and Pagano would lead a resurgence of Colts football but it was only short-lived. After the 2014 season, the Colts would go on to finish 8-8 in 2015 and 2016. Rumors of his firing would get louder but he was retained and given one more chance in 2017. Just so happens that his star quarterback, Luck would miss the season, thus sealing his fate.
It Was A Good Run For The Indianapolis Colts
In a statement today, Colts owner Jim Irsay had this to say about his former coach:
Throughout his tenure in Indianapolis, he impacted the lives of the players he coached, those who he worked with in the organization and Colts fans across the globe. Chuck’s first season was one of the more inspirational stories in NFL history as he courageously battled and overcame leukemia. As a result, his CHUCKSTRONG Foundation has raised millions for cancer research. We are thankful for Chuck’s contributions to our franchise and community and we wish him, Tina and the entire Pagano family nothing but the best moving forward.
While the Colts await a decision on the status of Andrew Luck, they must now begin the search for a new head coach.
