Indianapolis Colts: Offseason Panic Mode 2021 Edition

NFL Indianapolis Colts

2020 was a start-over season for the Indianapolis Colts. Despite bringing in Philip Rivers to fill the void at quarterback and winning games, there were plenty of holes that needed to be addressed. If the Colts can’t fix them in the draft, this season might be a reason to panic as well.

Wentz Has Big Shoes to Fill

If Carson Wentz thought getting out of Philly was going to be an easy ticket, he’s wrong. The Colts have a long history of good if not great quarterbacks. Wentz is already taking over for Philip Rivers who had a rough, but respectable season. Before him were the likes of Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning. He’s got all the talent in the world, but if mental pressure is his drawback then Indianapolis will be another tough go at it.

More Focus on Offensive Line

In order for Wentz to have success, he’s going to need to develop quick chemistry with his wide receivers. Since he’s starting over with a new playbook, what better way to push his success than to give him all the time in the world to make plays. Starting with the line up front, the Colts could use some upgrades to better both the run game and pass protection.

Get Jonathan Taylor Help

The rookie running back had a respectable season with over 1,100 yards. The only problem with that is, the next closest guy had 380. Sure the Colts can rely on the young legs of a rookie running back but eventually, the season will wear him down. To top it off, without a productive counterpart, defenses can key in on him when he’s on the field. If they can’t get someone with more relief, teams will eventually be able to make him a nonfactor.

Balance The Passing Offense

While the Colts statistically had an impressive line when it comes to YPC, their overall total yards were nothing to write back home about. There’s a good chance that a lot of it was due to the struggles of an aging Rivers, but the Colts need to find not only ways to get big plays but control the game with the less flashy plays. There has to be a balance between the deep plays and the ones that march down the field.

The Indianapolis Colts will be a coin toss this season. Either Carson Wentz will return to his old form or they’d better hope they have a deep sleeper waiting at QB. Can they keep up the pace with the rest of the AFC?
