Is It Too Little, Too Late For The New York Yankees?
With the string of awful play, the New York Yankees don’t look like the competitors they’re supposed to be this year. The season has seemed to spiral out so bad that GM Brian Cashman paid a rare visit to his team to try and get things back on track. If the past few games have been an indicator, they just maybe. But if you take a closer look, it might just be a couple of lucky breaks.
Right now the Yankees are swinging some ugly bats. Looking at their roster they should be a force to reckon with. However, right now they’re looking like a minor league team. There’s not too many even close to having a .300 batting average and only Dj LeMahieu is the lone player above that benchmark. Gary Sanchez is leading the team with 52 strikeouts in just 36 games. Aaron Hicks is the only Yankee who’s base-on-balls exceeds his strike-outs. Granted walks are a lot harder to come by, but its a giant red flag that they’re swinging extremely undisciplined at-bats.

Pitching is looking a little better for the Yanks but could use a boost as well. Garret Cole has proven to be the ace they had hoped for, winning 62% of his games and approaching the 100 strikeout mark. Masahiro Tanaka is at a distant second with only 34 K’s in 37 innings but still has a 3.16 ERA. If the Bronx Bombers want to be true contenders this offseason, the back of the rotation will need to have much stronger performances, either that or the bats need to come around to make up for the costly mistakes.
The time off was inadvertently was going to give the Yankees a chance to come back healthy and in full swing, but it looks like they’re coming back a little rusty. Unfortunately, unlike most years it there’s not a lot of time to bounce back. They’ve got 14 games to make up the 5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. As it stands they’d be the last place team out of the AL to make the playoffs, but if they can’t find a way to come back around, making the playoffs won’t even matter.
