Is Philip Rivers Hall of Fame Worthy?

LA Chargers qb Philip Rivers

Argue until you’re blue in the face, Philip Rivers is a Hall of Fame. The argument all over social media right now is raging strong. A career with the San Diego Chargers turned LA Chargers and his final year with the Colts speaks volumes. While he doesn’t have the championships to prove it, his place in history deserves to be noted.

There’s no way you can tell me a top 5 passer all time doesn’t deserve the Hall of Fame, especially who he had to pass to get there. In his 17 years, 2 longer than Aaron Rodgers, he has thrown for 12,000 more yards. John Elway, Warren Moon, and Fran Tarkenton are in the Hall of Fame and Rivers outgained them. Elway is at 51,475. Moon is 49,325, Tarkenton has 47,003. Rivers surpasses them all with 63,440 yards.

Maybe touchdowns are your all-important mark? Philip Rivers is 5th all-time on that list as well. Warren Moon is 14th with 291. Fran Tarkenton has 342 in 11th. Even John Elway has just 300 TDs and is in the Hall of Fame in 12th place. Rivers still has at least 79 more than any of those three with 421.

More Chargers: Is Philip Rivers the Next Dan Marino?

His lone blemish on his resume is his lack of Super Bowl wins but there’s a standard there as well. Dan Marino should be the bar in which you judge Philip Rivers. Marino is considered the greatest quarterback to never win the Super Bowl. Just this year alone Rivers would pass Marino in both categories. In passing yards, Marino has 61,361 to Rivers 63,440. Touchdowns Rivers just passed Marino as well with 421 to 420. Yep, you guessed it, Dan Marino is in the Hall of Fame.

He’s been the most consistent quarterback in his time as well. Since he replaced Drew Brees as quarterback for the then-San Diego Chargers, Philip Rivers has never missed a start. He committed to being the workhorse for the Chargers and doing all that he could to help that team win. In an age where professional athletes follow the money and abandon their team, Rivers stuck it out through the good and bad seasons with the Chargers rather than bailing for better days. Even when he left to join the Colts organization, it was because the Chargers decided it was time to move on from him, not the other way around.

Maybe Philip Rivers hasn’t had the flashiest of careers. Maybe he could’ve done more to chase championships with other teams. The fact of the matter is, since he became the leader of the Chargers organization, he gave his all and quietly racked up the stats to earn his place in history. If a top 5 quarterback all time doesn’t deserve the Hall of Fame then the entire concept is a scam.
