Is Shazam: Fury Of The Gods Set Up To Fail?

The DCU is in a transition phase. From the old DCEU to the new James Gunn and Peter Safran DCU it seems like they’re stepping away from the prior regime and on to bigger and better things. Rumor has it Gunn and Safran will be in complete control and there will be less if any, interference from the studio without their say. With that being said there are still movies that are already in production. Shazam: Fury of the Gods was far enough along in development that it wasn’t cut from the original plans, but there’s no guaranteeing the movie’s success.

Right now, confidence in DC and Warner Bros/Discovery to assemble a shared universe is at an all-time low. Fans want to believe Gunn and Safran who each have had success for DC will continue that trend. The only problem with that is, Shazam is kind of stuck in limbo. The movie is coming out and, with the first one’s success, there’s no doubt the second will be just as entertaining. It will be primarily the same cast of characters, same tone, and same DCU but is it closer to the old DCEU than the new DCU?

Forget where the new heads of DC Studios are going in the future. This isn’t about their plans. There’s a good chance they’ll do just fine. The problem going forward is the fans in waiting. Did the first Shazam movie do enough to keep fans engaged enough to see the sequel? That’s the big question right now. Shazam had no concrete ties to the DCEU. Other than a post-credit scene and some Easter eggs, it seemed to stand solo. Then there’s The Flash which is supposed to reset the entire DCU. If that’s the case, how does Shazam: Fury of the Gods fit anywhere in there?

It’ll be a shame if this movie doesn’t have any success as fans wait for what’s next. The first movie was clever and energetic. It was a break from the usually melancholy feel of the rest of the DCU. There was a glimmer of hope and fun in it that we didn’t get to see in much of the rest of the DCEU. Hopefully, fans enjoyed the first movie enough to give Shazam: Fury of the Gods a fair shot.
