Movies: It’s Worth Going The Distance With Brittany Runs A Marathon

Brittany Runs A Marathon

You’ll see a lot of feel-good movies this year. None will have an impact on you like Brittany Runs a Marathon. The film, while having its faults, is going inspire you. Is it worth the price of admission?

If you’re into the drama and comedy mash-up genre, Brittany Runs a Marathon is right up your alley. The film, which stars Jillian Bell, tells a positive and uplifting story that blends laughs, crying, and dramatic moments. It all works together extremely well.

Bell plays Brittany, a woman who looks to run the New York City Marathon as an inspiration to get herself healthy. The story, while nothing groundbreaking, is told well throughout the 1 hour and 45-minute runtime. You do feel like you’re along the ride on her journey through happiness, joy, pain, and suffering. In the end, you’ll feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that most films don’t give you.

This is a film that will resonate with certain people. Some will take more away from Brittany Runs a Marathon than others. While that’s not a bad thing, that can create some mixed reviews. Personally, the film didn’t hit well for me. This is definitely catered towards women. While guys can take something away from this movie, the effect probably won’t be the same.

More Entertainment: Rings Of Power Toxic Fandom Needs To End

As for the movie itself, there are some issues. For starters, this doesn’t know what kind of film it wants to be. Is it a drama with comedic moments, or a comedy with dramatic moments? There really isn’t a clear cut choice. While some enjoy films like this, others (like myself) wish they’d stick to one genre. With that being said, the comedic moments in the film are funny. And the dramatic moments really hit home.

Bell, who also produced the film, is hit or miss. There are scenes where shes great, and others where she falters. A rather tense scene with her best friend/ roommate really showcases her acting. She gets better throughout the film. This was the perfect piece for an up and coming actress like herself.

The rest of the cast does a good job at moving the story along. There were two standouts in Utkarsh Ambudkar (Jern), who provided most of the comedic moments, and Lil Rey Howery (Demetrius), the sensible father figure. Both added a bit of life and realness to the picture.

Would I venture to say Brittany Runs a Marathon is the best film of 2019, probably not. It’s good, not great. There’s a positive message to be found. If there was a more defined idea of what kind of film it was trying to be, and you’re the intended audience for this, it’ll rank a lot higher. It’s worth the price of admission if you’re into these kinds of films.
