Jacksonville Jaguars: They have the look of the 2007 New York Giants
The Jacksonville Jaguars have been an under the radar type of team. I say this because when you think of the AFC, you tend to think of teams like the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders and so on. The Jaguars are not on that list. However, it seems that the 2017 Jaguars seem to be on that list. You have a team that no one took for real and they have proved doubters into believers. It isn’t far-fetched to even say that the 2017 Jaguars are like the 2007 New York Giants.
The biggest difference between the two is that the Giants had some big names on that team. You had guys like Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Amani Toomer, and others. You don’t really have that on Jacksonville. However, these teams are built very similarly. For starters, you have Tom Coughlin leading the team. Yes, I am aware that he isn’t the head coach of the Jaguars, however, he is still helping head coach Doug Marrone. He was the head coach in New York. Another similarity between the two is that they have a very good defense. People have made the argument that the defense is what helped carry the Giants to beat the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl. The Jaguars have relied a lot on the defense during the 2017 season.
Another way the two teams are similar was who they needed to go through in the playoffs. While the Jaguars didn’t need to be “road warriors” like the 2007 New York Giants, they still didn’t have an easy road to the AFC Championship Game. They needed to go through Buffalo, which while they aren’t tough, it was still a tough game. Then they went into Heinz Field and defeated the Steelers 45-42. The New York Giants in 2007 went through the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys before having a match with the Green Bay Packers.
You can also make the comparison in two more places between the two teams. The Quarterback play is very similar. There were a ton of moments during the 2007 season when Eli Manning got lucky. The same could be said with Blake Bortles. In addition, head coach Doug Marrone may not exhibit the similar things like Tom Coughlin did in New York, they are similar because they are similar spots in their coaching careers.
The result on Sunday may or may not be in the Jacksonville Jaguars favor, it is safe to say that they are a team on a mission and will be relevant for some time.
