Jacksonville Jaguars: Tim Tebow Is Too Little, Too Late

Jaguars Tim Tebow

The Jacksonville Jaguars are apparently bringing in Tim Tebow to try out at tight end this offseason. Whether or not it is a publicity stunt, a favor to an old friend, or just something to take the buzz off the rookies in camp, the Jags are likely to be a circus this offseason.

First, Tim Tebow has never played tight end at it is too late in his career to transition. Tebow hasn’t played a game since 2012 with the New York Jets. For those doing the math, just shy of nine years will have gone by from the time he took his last snap with the Jets and his first with the Jags. At 34 when week 1 rolls around, Tebow doesn’t really have the benefit of a few seasons to adjust to a new position. Five, if not six, years ago this would’ve been a believable move, but there’s no way he’s going in as a tight end.

Call this what it is, bringing the once QB in as a tight end is a backward way for Tebow to take on a mentor role without as much of a circus. Everyone around the team is saying just how much of a leader Tebow is, Urban Meyer brought him in to buddy up to their new rookie quarterback. The problem with that is, bringing him in as a QB looks bad on Trevor Lawrence. How would it look if they bring in a failed quarterback to mentor the first overall pick they’re betting their entire future on? Even if he’s not going to spend time with the young QB, that kind of professionalism could be contagious for a rookie class. Giving him a tryout is low risk for them even if he’s a long shot to make the roster.

All the way back as far as his days with the Jets, there was talk of Tebow switching positions. Three years in the league and in his prime, it would’ve made sense. Now it just looks like an old college coach doing a favor for a down-and-out veteran who never got his fair shot in the league. Nothing against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tim Tebow, but he had the demeanor and professionalism to be an analyst. He could’ve stuck with that.

There’s a spot for Tim Tebow in professional sports. It’s just not on the field for the Jacksonville Jaguars. At the very least Meyer should’ve brought him on as an assistant QB coach and let him be the leader he can be.
