Kansas City Chiefs: Offseason Panic Mode 2021 Edition

Chiefs Patrick Mahomes

It’s hard to think that one of the toughest teams in football to beat could ever be in panic mode, but the Kansas City Chiefs just might be. They’re still the team to beat in most people’s eyes until proven otherwise. However, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought them back down to earth in the Super Bowl. It’s time for some changes.

Too Much Tape?

Patrick Mahomes has taken the NFL by storm since taking over as the starting quarterback for the Chiefs. He’s the gold standard of a winner when it comes to the newer generation of quarterbacks. But the fact of the matter is, he got blown up in the Super Bowl. It was the first time in a long while where he looked human. Now that it was out there for the whole world to see, will teams catch on to the plays and schemes that slowed him down?

Cap Space

Kansas City has already signed plenty of talent this offseason. Everyone wants to play with a team on the rise. The only problem is they still have to draft and fill minor holes with little to no wiggle room. They’ll have less than a month until this year’s draft but will have to make some tough choices on how to keep this team together.

Bulk Up Line

While the Chiefs did sign a top-tier lineman in Joe Thuney, one might not be enough. Between injuries and sloppy play, KC’s offensive line looked like a crossing guard trying to stop traffic on a six-lane highway. Pass protection was suspect at best. No way their offense can continue to operate effectively without timing. You can expect an OL-heavy draft.

Stronger Defense

Nothing says “championship team” quite like a good defense. While they were adequate, Kansas City could use some upgrades. The rest of the division is stocked on talent and the Chiefs need to balance their attack to the other side of the ball. They could use stronger pass rushers to get after quarterbacks. It wouldn’t hurt to also stock up on coverage linebackers who can get to QBs as well. It’s not their weak link but it never hurts to upgrade on defense.

There’s no doubt the Kansas City Chiefs could be in the run for the Super Bowl again this year. Until the rest of the NFL catches up with the explosiveness of this team or contracts break up a core unit, it’ll be the Chiefs division to win.
