Labeled A “Game Manager”, Alex Smith’s Career Deserves Respect
Alex Smith might never get the credit he deserves as an NFL quarterback. No one will look back at his career and throw him into the “Greatest of All-time” conversation. However, If it weren’t for Alex Smith over the years, teams would struggle to remain relevant. He’s played for the San Francisco 49ers, the Kansas City Chiefs, and now the Washington Redskins/Football Team.
The 49ers struggled at first but would eventually start winning games under Alex Smith. He would eventually be replaced by Colin Kaepernick who would eventually go on to take the 49ers to the Super Bowl. Smith would be traded to the Chiefs for a second-round pick to take over as QB for an Andy Reid lead team. Reid and Smith would go on to have multiple 10 win seasons with Smith leading the way. It wasn’t long before KC was able to stockpile their talent who could complement his talent although they would eventually go on to draft Patrick Mahomes before trading him to Washington in 2018.

Before a gruesome injury, Alex Smith had the, then, Redskins at 6-4 and competitive in the NFC East. After breaking both his tibia and fibula. Multiple surgeries and an infection later, and he’d be on his way to rehabbing his leg. Two years later, in a move that was probably out of respect for the work he put in, the Washington Football Team welcomed him back with a roster spot.
With Washington struggling to win football games, Alex Smith would take back his role as the starting quarterback. His career alone should earn him the respect of the rest of the NFL for holding teams afloat while they could bring talent in to be competitive. Then you add in how hard he worked to not only get back to playing shape but to take the field at all. He deserves more respect for fighting through one of the worst injuries without giving up.
Alex Smith should hands down take Comeback Player of the Year this NFL season, but his success means so much more. Not only did he come back, but he’s also made the Washington Football Team competitive. They’re 3-1 since he’s returned as their starter and Washington is now tied for first place in the division with the New York Giants.
Alex Smith might not be the “greatest of all time”, but you have to respect his career-long mentality to never give up.
