LeBron James Is Set To Remake The Hip Hop Classic House Party Movie
In 1990, Hip Hop forever etched their name in Hollywood with the big screen movie House Party starring Kid ‘n Play. The movie was based on teenagers dealing with school, over-bearing parents, bullies, women, and of course, Hip Hop. 28 years later and one of the film’s biggest fans, LeBron James has agreed to do a remake of the Hip Hop classic according to THR.
This is definitely not a reboot. It’s an entirely new look for a classic movie,” James told The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported about the project on Tuesday. “Everyone I grew up with loved ‘House Party.’ To partner with this creative team to bring a new ‘House Party’ a new generation is unbelievable.
Play decided he wanted to throw a monster party with his parents away and sought the services of his friend’s Kid and Bilal to help. However, Kid got into a fight at school and tried to intercept the letter before his dad found out. No such luck. Kid was grounded for the night but Play was hell-bent on having his party anyway.
What ensued was nothing short of brilliant in a time when Hip Hop was turning more violent. House Party provided laughs, a look into single-parenting, friends, love and one of the best in-movie performances ever. LeBron joked that he may have to school some of his younger teammates on the history of the movie, but for fans who fell in love with a young Tisha Campbell-Martin, Kid ‘n Play, and Martin Lawrence, this is a dream come true.
As LeBron stated, this is more of him paying homage to one of the movies that he loved growing up years ago.
“Listen, it’s fun, it’s an honor when I got the opportunity to produce it, reboot the whole movie, man, I had so much fun as a kid watching that movie,” James said at the Cavs shootaround in Oklahoma City on Tuesday. “When I was growing up as a youngster I was like, ‘Man, I hope I get an opportunity to throw one of these house parties, where it’s just a lot of fun, a lot of joking around, dancin’, people just having a good time.
Will the new adaption be able to live up to the original is the big question? The screenplay will be done by Atlanta writers Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori. There is no timetable on when production will start or when the movie will be released. But for now, House Party is set to make a return to the big screen soon.
