Long Island Ducks: Set a Scoring Record in Historical Home Opener

After going .500 on the road, the Long Island Ducks came home on Friday for the home opener. They would end up playing the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. This would be a team that they played a week ago and would take the series by winning two out of three games. The second time these teams met would be a historical night for the Long Island Ducks. They would end up winning the game, 27-9. No that isn’t an exaggeration, the bats were clicking. The record was 25 that was set on June 9, 2011, when they were playing Lancaster.

Credit for this game needs to go to the hitting. We need to first look at Cody Puckett. He ended up driving in six runs. While he had a great game, he wasn’t the only one who drove in multiple runs. In addition to Cody Puckett’s big night, the Ducks also got runs driven in by Jordany Valdespin, Lew Ford, and David Washington. Those three guys alone drove in 10 runs. The pitching really wasn’t there for the Ducks on this night. However, when a team drives in 27 runs it really doesn’t matter. The Ducks came out hitting hard and it seemed that everything was working.

My guess is that they were a bit frustrated with how the road trip played out and wanted to return home with a bang. Heading into tomorrow night’s game there are a few things to look out for. For starters, the Blue Crabs bullpen isn’t at 100%. Since they needed to turn to several pitchers, it will be interesting to see how they attack Saturday night. Also, it will be interesting to see how the Ducks respond and if they continue this run. I have mentioned this before, but I will say it again.

What makes this team lethal is that they get hits from every batter. It seems that guys like David Washington, Lew Ford, and Jordany Valdespin are constantly talked about because they impacted the game in one way or another. You also heard the excitement in the players for the press conference.
Game 2 of this series takes place at 6:35 pm on Saturday night.
