Long Island Ducks: They fell to the Blue Crabs in the 2018 opener
The 2018 season begun for the Long Island Ducks. They would begin their season playing the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Ducks Manager Kevin Baez would end up giving the ball to former MLB player Jair Jurrjens. Maryland Blue Crabs manager Joe Frisbie would end up sending Daryl Thompson to the hill. Unfortunately, the Ducks didn’t have it on this night as they would end up losing 6-1 and falling to 0-1 to start the season. There were a few issues that the Ducks had that didn’t help the situation.
For starters, the pitching wasn’t there. Between Jair Jurrjens and Matt Marsh, they pitched 5 innings, giving up 12 hits, and 6 runs. It doesn’t matter what team you have if your pitching is allowing that many hits then it will be tough to win. Another area that the Ducks had problems in was that they left five guys on base. Yes, the Blue Crabs did leave 11 on base, but if the Ducks would have gotten those guys in then maybe we are talking about a much different game. Finally, the Ducks players had no answers for Blue Crabs pitcher Daryl Thompson. He would end up pitching 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 2 hits and striking out 7.
The two teams are set to do battle again on Saturday night in Game 2 of the three-game set. There is still time for this team to fix the mistakes that they made in Friday’s loss. We will hopefully see guys like Ruben Gotay, Derrick Pyles, and others who have good numbers when playing the Blue Crabs. It’s worth mentioning that these teams will clash again as the Blue Crabs will be coming to Long Island for the Ducks home opener. The Long Island Ducks home opener will be May 4th at 6:35 pm.
Stay tuned to WBLZ Media as we will continue to provide the latest information regarding the Ducks as the quest for another title is on.
