Marvel: How Has The MCU “Fallen” This Much?
To put it nicely, the latest phase of Marvel and the MCU has been hit with mixed reviews. There have been movies or shows that fans have adored but also ones that haven’t been received well at all. Is it really superhero fatigue or is there more at play here than people would like to admit?
The number one reason people want to drag the MCU through the muck right now resides with the toxic fanbase side of things. This whole “go woke, go broke” attack on diversity in movies is the latest example of people with no logical reason why they’re not in love with the Marvel universe the way they once were. Throw out terms such as “woke” or “MSheU” and get on that bandwagon all you want, but it just shows how little you have an original thought in your head.

First and foremost, comic books have always been political and diverse. Do we not remember that Captain America is wartime propaganda about fighting Nazis in World War II. X-Men is a comic about how outcasts, freaks, and weirdos can be heroes too. Spider-Man was about a nerdy high school kid from Queens. Just because you hold so tightly to these characters you’ve grown to love, doesn’t mean that the morals and values haven’t always been echoed in the medium they were portrayed. You’re just too caught up in politics that it’s making you hate the things you once loved.
But there’s more to it than that.
Don’t forget, these movies aren’t just failing at the domestic box office. They’re being met with the same struggles at the worldwide box office as well. One thing I can assure you of, people overseas don’t give a damn about American politics such as “wokeism”.
The real reason Marvel and the MCU are struggling right now is they finally caught up to the problem with DC. Marvel has had success and built off of it because there was so little to compare it to before. Other than made-for-TV movies that looked like a group of friends cosplaying and making a movie on the public access channels, there wasn’t much to compare a Marvel movie to.
People have panned over every DC movie made as of late because there have been character-defining roles before them. It was hard for people to accept Health Ledger as Joker, because of Jack Nicholson before him. They couldn’t accept Robert Pattinson as Batman because of Christain Bale and Michael Keaton before him. Wonder Woman was a success and despite Linda Carter’s success, no one portrayed the character on the big screen before Gal Gadot.

The list can go on and on on why Jason Momoa worked well as Aquaman. James Gunn had success with The Suicide Squad because not only were the characters ones fans hadn’t seen before to compare but there was also the much-hated movie before it that set the tone.
Sorry Marvel and MCU fans. Welcome to the world of toxic fandoms where people can’t go out and just enjoy characters anymore. If they bring in someone to be the “new” Iron Man, they’ll always get compared to Robert Downey Jr. Anthony Mackie will never stand a chance as the new Captain America because there will always be the Chris Evans version out there. Before either of those two donned the spandex, they had zero expectations going into their characters and thus no pressure.
Could Marvel be doing better? Sure. But maybe some of the current hatred would go away if you let go of the characters you hold so close and appreciate the stories they’re building going forward.
