Marvel: Is Loki the Next MCU Villain?

Disney+ Loki

When it comes to fan favorites, there are few villains MCU fans love more than Loki. After the events of Thor Ragnarok, and leading up to Avengers: Infinity War Loki has died and come back a few times. In Avengers: Endgame, Loki came back yet again thanks to an alteration in the timeline while the team tried to stop Thanos, and here we are with his self-titled show Loki.

From IMDb.com

“The mercurial villain Loki resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Spoilers ahead so if you’re not ready for next Wednesday’s episode, you might want to stop here.

After the first episode, we learn that there is yet another Loki out there running around causing havoc on this timeline. We learn that Mobius, played by Owen Wilson, has a very close connection to Loki and maybe even a soft spot for him. He recruits the current Loki to stop a time-hopping Loki from destroying the prime timeline. But what if these two are one and the same?

What if the Loki we see at the beginning of the show, is the same Loki disrupting the time stream by the end of the show. After all, Loki is the “God of Mischief”, and since this is not the same Loki who attempted to redeem himself in Endgame, he hasn’t turned to the good side just yet.

Then of course we have what unfolds in the interrogation room. Not only does he see his failure over and over again, but he also gets a glimpse of his future and his death. His death is the price he pays for trying to do good, trying to be the hero. If the story unfolds that his fate is always destined to die a hero’s death, could we see him turn back to his usual ways?

As we learned on the show, a variance from the original timeline sends a shockwave of different timelines out in multiple time streams. This obviously would lead to the Doctor Strange sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which begs the question, is Loki the new villain again in the MCU?

Not only would he be the reason for the timeline split, but his story would also then branch out further to more titles in the MCU as well. We already know that Spider-Man has been hinted towards part of the multiverse story going ahead. Then, of course, there’s Thor Love and Thunder coming out as well. His story may play a part in that as well.

Loki might not be on the level of Thanos, but the MCU needs to scale back their villains in order to build their universe. The new MCU will eventually bring in characters like the X-men who could match villains on the level of Thanos. In order to do so, they have to connect multiple universes with a very complex story. Throwing in an overpowered villain would ultimate be tiresome on the audience. Why not throw in a God of Mischief who could be mischievous with long-lasting consequences on the current class of heroes?
