MGM Looking to Sell, Apple Needs to Buy

MGM's Rocky Apple

Apple has been looking to become a major player in the streaming world. They’ve hit the ground running with their quality content over quantity. With hits like The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, and See, to name a few, they’ve established notoriety. Unfortunately for them, they’re battling the rest of the streaming world for new and exciting projects while trying to develop their own. With The Wall Street Journal reporting MGM is looking to sell their library and studio, the big tech company should swoop in and outbid all buyers.

First and foremost, MGM isn’t the largest studio on the block but does have some interesting franchises to solidify Apple TV+ as a major player. By purchasing MGM, the streaming service would receive popular movie franchises like Rocky and James Bond.

On the television side of things, they’d get The Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo, and Stargate. Each of those properties has their own homes already on streaming services but as we’ve seen with shows like Friends and The Office, once their contract is up they can be pulled from one service in favor of another or bought out of their contract completely.

When it comes to owning exclusive rights, having the entire 25 film library of James Bond alone would boost their chances of luring in a wider audience. The Rocky/Creed films are at the end of their run but are still popular on television each year.

When it comes to upcoming projects, Apple would gain the rights to Tomb Raider, the third Creed film, as well as a couple of long-awaited sequels. Apple+ might be appealing to a smaller audience to promote a smaller streaming service that brings more value to their Apple One services bundle but they might not be able to pass up this opportunity.

As it stands, Warner Bros has already absorbed the popular Hanna Barbera family-friendly characters like Tom and Jerry and other properties so they could have an interest in the purchase. Big players like Disney would more than likely pass with their current slate of powerhouse franchises already. Apple would gain long-running franchises, a production studio to continue their original content, and a few other television titles rounding out everything they’re looking for with streaming. If the tech giant is looking to be true players in the streaming world, then MGM should be the studio they’re poking around purchasing.
