Miami Dolphins: 2020 Running Back Rewind
For the 2020 season, the Miami Dolphins were only slightly aggressive when it comes to fixing the running back position. They signed Jordan Howard in free agency. They also traded for Matt Breida and DeAndre Washington. Despite their moves, there was a mixed success at the running back position.
Jordan Howard
Howard wasn’t the player they expect. He was the Dolphins equivalent of the player drafted in fantasy but first cut when better options became available it was time to move on. Howard consistently had fewer yards than attempts but would consistently get the 1-yard score. He served his purpose but wasn’t a good fit in Miami and was cut before the season ended.

Matt Breida
Breida was another gamble but had a bit more upside. While he never developed into a full-time running back, his occasional burst provided just enough change of pace. He’d lead the team in rushing yards but barely managed over 500 yards. Miami could bring him back for the right price, but there’s a good chance they roll out with a draftee and returning players. The Dolphins could also free up cap space to make a play for a proven veteran.
Salvon Ahmed
Ahmed was the highlight of the 2020 season despite not having the stats. He came in when injuries hit and gave just enough of a jolt to keep the offense moving. He’d be the second leading rusher but also was only over 300 yards. Miami has him at a discount and could bring him back in a backup role again this season.
Lynn Bowden Jr.
Miami traded for the rookie third-round pick and he saw limited action. Despite being a running back in Oakland, Miami would switch him to a more receiver role but he managed to get in the run game as well. He’s a versatile player who could play both receiver and running back and will more than likely keep his roster spot.
The Dolphins were awful in the run game. The offense will need to upgrade the position as well as the offensive line. If they can’t, don’t expect them to have much better luck in 2021.
