Miami Dolphins: 2022 Over/Under Predictions

Mike McDaniel's Miami Dolphins press conference

The Miami Dolphins have a new lease on life. Their new head coach Mike McDaniel brings a breath of fresh air to the team so far and there’s some buzz surrounding the team after a busy offseason. They have all the potential in the world to be a great football team this year but, as the past has shown, potential doesn’t always show up on the Sundays. With their new look, just how good can they be? Breaking down their potential for 2022:

Tua Tagovailoa: 4,000 yards

Over, but barely. The ability is there, the timing isn’t. You can work out all offseason to get your timing down, on game day its a totally different beast. The Dolphins might air it out throughout the season, but it won’t show early on. Down the stretch Tua might hit his stride but the explosiveness won’t be on display in Week 1.

Rushing: 1000 Yards By Any Running Back

Under. That’s not to say the Miami Dolphins running back position won’t be a major factor in their offense but with the depth what it is it’ll be challenging to get one guy there. Each back has their strengths and weaknesses and will be used accordingly. Expect a running back by committee approach to the run game.

AFC East Wins: 3

Over, but not by much. Don’t expect the Dolphins to sweep 2 out of 3 of their AFC opponents. This division is so backwards that a team can have 3 wins on the season and 2 of them will be in the division. It’s a crap shoot so while Miami could sweep one, look for splits with the other two in any combination.

Win Totals: 10

Push. That’s the Miami Dolphins’ ceiling. It’s hard to imagine them winning 11-12 games under a new head coach, with a new offense, working with new weapons. Will this team be able to get their within a season or two? Absolutely, but mistakes are going to be made early on, it’ll be how they adjust and recover to get there.

Team Sacks: 50

Over. Only 3 teams ended last year with 50+ sacks, but the Miami Dolphins were close with 48. They kept the majority of their defense together, kept their coordinator, and improved the roster. Rookies played a large part in those sacks so if they can make their year-two leap, expect the defense to be much improved.

Team Interceptions: 15

Push. As much as the Dolphins will look to be more aggressive on defense, its hard to imagine them improving on their INT totals for last year. Teams are getting smarter when it comes to challenging the Miami DBs. Very few are trying to fit it in tight windows against them.

Jaylen Waddle: 1000 Yards Receiving

Under. The hardest call was whether JW gets 1000 yards receiving. Unless Tua Tagovailoa has the hottest hand in football right out of the gate, he might fall just shy with ~950-960. Tyreek Hill might make more room for other receivers to get opportunities, but defenses will key in on those two.
