Miami Dolphins: 3 Draft Day Trades If Their Pick Is Gone

Dolphins potential QBs trade

There have been a handful of quarterbacks linked to the Miami Dolphins in this year’s NFL Draft. However, with teams in desperate need at the position and the Dolphins desperate need to rebuild theres a good chance that teams could leap frog the number 5 pick. Teams like the Chargers, Panthers, and even the Patriots moved on to a new man under center.

While some of those teams in need have filled their needs through free agency, that doesn’t mean they’ll miss out on a deep draft class either. Three names are rumored to be atop the Dolphins board with 4 teams that pick before them. Plenty reports suggest each team ahead of them is open to trading back, though it’s unlikely the Bengals will. However, each team could be linked to a quarterback as well. So if Miami misses the QB boat, there’s no reason they can’t still get a quarterback this year. Should the top 4 teams go with QBs here’s how the Dolphins can select someone like Chase Young and still get their guy via trade:

More Dolphins: End of Season Awards

Deshaun Watson – Hou

The Houston Texans are a wildcard when it comes to the draft. They’ve already moved on from one star player and another could be on the way. With 29-year old Aj McCarron in the fold, Houston could let Watson go and draft his replacement this season with a pick they get from Miami.

What would it take: If the Dolphins were smart they wouldn’t offer Houston their 26th pick back, but instead use their 18th pick overall. Combine that with their pick from next season in return and a late round pick 5th through 7th,  and it shouldn’t cost another early pick. If Miami gives back the 26th it would probably push them back to giving up a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Matt Ryan – ATL

The Atlanta Falcons would probably never give up their star quarterback, but no one thought the Pats would either. At 34-years old, Ryan might be at the end of his career but he still has a cannon. He’d be an upgrade over Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen, and Miami could still draft a quarterback later in the first round to be his replacement.

What would it take: Atlanta picks 16th overall and being in the middle of the pack they’re missing the QB window and would over draft the next wave. If the Dolphins offer 26th overall with next year’s second, and a 7th this year it could work out. Miami would have wiggle room to get the later tier qbs in the second round and it would put Atlanta in position to get back into the next tier of QBs as well.

Matthew Stafford – Det

Stafford is another quarterback who has a cannon and could fit a rebuild formula. Detroit hasn’t been willing to move on from players in the past and probably will stick to their guns here. However with limited wins and a history of failure they could use a stockpile of picks.

What would it take: The Dolphins could offer up a similar haul to the Lions for Stafford as Ryan. The Lions are just in a better position to move on. With the 3rd pick overall they’re right in the hunt for a top QB. Head coach Matt Patricia surely has a connection to Brian Flores from their time in New England, but will the Lions actually move on.

One way or another, the Miami Dolphins will end up with a quarterback this offseason. They could even end up with two. A future franchise quarterback and the one who allows them to groom him. Yes, they still have Fitzpatrick but a playmaker like Waston, Stafford, or Ryan would be instant upgrades.
