Miami Dolphins: 4 Upgrades That Could Strengthen Their Roster
Free agency is right around the corner, and the legal tampering period is even sooner. The Miami Dolphins have plenty of cap space to spend and outside the obvious offensive line help, there are a few key positions they can add to bolster their roster.
Chandler Jones
Jones is a monster pass-rushing threat. Right now the Dolphins are trying to work out a deal with Emmanuel Ogbah to bring back his pass rush attack. Jones will likely cost top dollar. He’s now 32-years old but his attack hasn’t slowed down when it comes to getting to the quarterback. Miami will need to pair him with solid run-stoppers. The defense of the Miami Dolphins is already stout, but as they make adjustments, they’ll lose a few free agents themselves. The AFC East has competitive quarterbacks and having an edge rusher who can consistently get pressure is key.
Bobby Wagner
Wagner has been a staple of the Seattle Seahawks defense for years. They look like they’re making the necessary moves to retool if not do a full rebuild after moving on from players like Russell Wilson and Wagner. Miami for years has had a need at linebacker, despite their good, young talent they’ve ignored making a dominant focus of their defense. The Dolphins have struggled against speedy slot receivers and bigger tight ends like Rob Gronkowski for years. Wagner will also turn 32 before the season starts and if they can keep that unit ever-evolving and pushing their limits, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone like Wagner in-house.

Allen Robinson
The Miami Dolphins were rumored to be a landing spot for Robinson a few years ago. While they’ve had a deep unit over the past few seasons, they’ve struggled to stay consistent and stay healthy. Robinson could add the wrinkle to the offense last year that Will Fuller was supposed to bring. If Parker can’t stay healthy, Robinson and Waddle could spread the field. There will be plenty of teams going in on Robinson including AFC East rivals. Miami needs to take him off the competition board and get him in a jersey or regret it in divisional games.
Auden Tate
Miami is expected to go all-in for weapons for Tua Tagovailoa’s success. One of the first videos we saw after Mike McDaniel was hired was his phone call to Tua. McDaniel’s success will be closely tied to Tua’s ability to take the next step. If Miami was looking for a big-bodied receiver that has enough speed to create separation then Tate should be on their radar. If he can’t get separation against top-tier defenders he’ll have the size advantage in most cases to win more toss ups. In a pass-happy offense that spread the football around, Tate was able to rack up almost 800 yards with the Bengals last year.
You can expect receivers and offensive line to be their focus in the offseason. They’ve struggled to draft and develop good linemen and have a deep pick in the first round in the draft. Tate might be under the radar for most teams and won’t be a cap breaker.
The Miami Dolphins will more than likely go through an identity change as they switch to the new head coach. Luckily for fans they were able to retain most of their defense and it won’t need as much focus. Still the Dolphins will go hard towards offense but will upgrade where possible.
