Miami Dolphins: Breaking the Roster – QB

Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick

The 2019 season for the Miami Dolphins exceeded low expectations. Analysts on every channel and every output had them winning two games or less. They’d finish the season with 5 wins throwing a wrench in the plans of the “tankers”. Fast-forward to today and the roster overhaul looks to be inevitable. Free-agency and the draft are right around the corner and we can expect the roster to look a lot different possibly starting at quarterback. Breaking down their current depth, next year under center might be the strength of their offseason.

Ryan Fitzpatrick

Fitzpatrick has already stated he would like to return next season and the Dolphins would welcome him back. Barring a major setback he’s 100% expected to be the team’s starter next season. Even if the team drafts a rookie, much like Rosen this season that player would have to earn their spot atop the depth chart. Brian Flores started early in the season how much a quarterback can develop sitting and watching behind a starter. Fitz brought his magic that kept the team alive and energetic. Unless someone comes in and is leaps and bounds above the competition he should be penciled in as Miami’s early starter.

Josh Rosen

If there was anyone on this Dolphins roster who was in control of his future, it’s Josh Rosen. Rosen might end up being the odd man out again this offseason, or he can catapult his way into the starting role with a strong showing. Rosen should have zero pressure to perform if the team ends up drafting a quarterback early on. Best case scenario, he shows up and reaches his potential.

Worst case, the rookie beats him out and he has trade value. Miami more than likely won’t trade him pre-draft and risk destroying his confidence altogether. Instead, if he stumbles, the Dolphins could choose to move on from him by the time the 53 man roster cuts take place. Remember, the Dolphins still have ammo for next offseason as well going into the draft and wouldn’t mind stockpiling picks then too. If Rosen wants to be a Dolphin, the ball is in his hands.

Rookie Quarterback

Make no mistake about it, Miami will draft a quarterback in the first round of this draft. Fans might cry out “Give Rosen a shot” in favor of building around him. While the Dolphins haven’t given up on Rosen just yet, they’re all about building for the future. They could draft a quarterback this year while Rosen takes the reigns.

Rosen is getting paid backup money to play for the Dolphins and having a rookie on a rookie’s contract, they won’t have invested a ton of money in the position. Miami could end up with three potential starters this year for less than the cost of one franchise QB. If rookie wage scales are ~4 years/22 mil. then Rosen would be at just over $2 million, Fitz is due just over $8 mil, the Dolphins would invest around $15 million. For perspective, Ryan Tannehill was making $18-$20 million.

If anything, the quarterback should be the strength of the offense next season. Fitzpatrick made plays with a limited cast, some of which were written off as a bust. Now, with a reload on talent, Miami should be trending upwards.
