Miami Dolphins: Can Tyreek Hill Really Hit 2,000 Yards?
Miami Dolphins star wide receiver made quite the statement about the 2023 season. On his podcast (It Needed To Be Said) Hill claimed he will break 2,000 yards next year. That would be a first for an NFL wide receiver as the current record is 1,964 yards which was set all the way back in 2012 by Calvin Johson. There have been a few WRs to come close such as Cooper Kupp in 2021 with 1,947, but no one has hit the 2k mark yet. So maybe his prediction isn’t as far-fetched as it may seem.
At face value, it might seem like Hill is being overconfident in himself with breaking the single-season record. However, the NFL did expand to a 17th game in 2021 so the average per game drops off a bit. In a sixteen-game season, the Miami Dolphins receiver would have had to hit 125 yards/game. With the extra game tacked on, that average drops to 117 yards/game. Eight extra yards/game doesn’t seem like much, but there are good weeks and bad weeks where yards will fluctuate. Still, none of that matters as Hill had 1,148 through 10 games last year for an average of 114.8.

While that might be lower than the 117.64 needed to hit the 2,000-yard mark, there are a few asterisks that should be noted. First, there were multiple games against AFC opponents where Hill couldn’t get his footing. Against the Buffalo Bills, he only had 33. Against the New York Jets, 47. The Pittsburgh Steelers held him to 72. Oddly enough the Cleveland Browns held him to just 44. “So what, he’ll have to face those teams again this year”.
That’s where Hill will have to make up some ground. He claimed last season he didn’t fully grasp the playbook and was making it work implying raw talent alone. Dolphins fans hope this year he only gets better. He’ll need to if he wants to hit that mark. In both games against the Jets, only 70 yards. Against the Bills 3 times, 171 yards. New England even held him under that pace with just 149 yards in two games. Those six division rivals held him to 35 yards per game, 57 yards per game, and 74.5 yards per game.
To Tyreek Hill’s credit, his productivity might have been derailed by Tua Tagovailoa’s injury, but that’s not so much of an excuse if you want to hit that lofty goal. Even after Tua went down, Hill still had big games. Can he hit 2,000 yards with the Miami Dolphins? It’s possible but I wouldn’t bet on it. There are so many variables at play and while it’s not out of the realm of possibility, his career-best was last year with a mix of quarterbacks. You would think he would’ve got close with the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. Personally, the receiving record has stood for too long, more power to him. Unfortunately, it’s a goal that may be out of reach.
