Miami Dolphins: End of Season Awards
Looking back at the 2019 season, there weren’t many bright spots for the Miami Dolphins. It was a trying season for the first-year head coach Brian Flores. Picking up where Adam Gase left off, Flores had a lot of housecleaning to do. The season over it’s time to hand out end of the year awards.
Most Improved – Devante Parker:
Parker had been written off as a draft bust, but 2019 proved there’s still a lot of football left in the young star. In the last seven weeks of the season, he lead the NFL in receiving yards with 733. He would go on to finish the year fifth in total yards and a career-best 1202.
Most Exciting – Mike Gesicki:
While Gesicki still has room for improvement, 2019 showed why he was the threat the Dolphins drafted him for. With five touchdowns and 570 yards, Gesicki showed a ton of improvement down the stretch. If he continues to improve at the pace he did this season, it won’t be long before he’s a top threat in the NFL.
MVP – Ryan Fitzpatrick:
Fitzpatrick has been the perfect veteran for this season. His professionalism has been like no other. The journeyman vet has been the bridge or stop-gap quarterback for many years. He’s never gotten over the hump of an every day franchise quarterback but this season showed his worth. After being benched in favor of second-year QB Josh Rosen, Fitz came in and took control of the offense. He’d go 5-4 down the stretch but his energy and excitement was the leadership this young team needed.
Rookie of the Year – Christian Wilkins:
While there were many candidates for ROTY, Wilkins barely edged out the competition. He lead all rookie defensive lineman with 55 tackles. While he didn’t have a ton of sacks in 2019, recording just two, his energy and personality was a much-needed spark. At one point he even lined up at full back, catching a touchdown on offense. The versatile lineman should bring excitement for years to come.
2019 might not have been the Dolphins’ best season but there was a ton of promise. The rookies showed a bright future ahead. The veterans stepped up where needed. The coaches lead with hope and optimism. While this season ended early, it showed the Dolphins made the right choice in leadership.
