Miami Dolphins: Fitzpatrick Should Be Welcomed Back
The Miami Dolphins MVP of 2019 has earned the right to play in 2020 and it should be in Miami. While there has been plenty of speculation about what the team will do in the NFL draft with their three first-round picks, Miami has its options. For the right price, Fitzpatrick should be welcomed back with open arms.
Fans might want the Dolphins to saddle up for the future and at his age, Ryan Fitzpatrick won’t be in it for much longer. However, if 2019 was any indication of what Fitzpatrick brings to the team then the Dolphins need him back. Even if the Dolphins beat the Pats on Sunday, a five-win finish isn’t what you want out of your team. Without Fitz-magic, the Dolphins might not have squeezed out those wins.
Then, of course, there’s the Josh Rosen of it all. While Miami might not know the true future of Rosen, there’s one thing that Fitz brings that he doesn’t, veteran leadership. Rosen might be under center next season. He might be competition for whoever they bring in from the draft. Unfortunately for Dolphins fans, he doesn’t have the energy and years of experience shown this season with Fitzpatrick. Rosen might eventually posses the command of the offense with maybe four or five years under his belt, but the savvy vet kept the young team focused.
Even if Ryan Fitzpatrick is brought back as a backup role, whoever is under center could still alarm him. Heck Fitz doesn’t even need to be brought back in a player capacity, his knowledge and energy would be a perfect fit in a coach’s role. Miami needs a veteran in the quarterback room to be the leader until the next guy finds his footing.
It might be a different Dolphins team next season, and the coaching staff has been great at developing players. However, it takes more than just the coaches on the sidelines. Players respond to who’s been in the trenches and Fitzpatrick has been nothing but class. If he wants a spot with the organization, Miami has to let him back.
