The Miami Dolphins have been looking to rebuild their offense for a while now. While the offseason focus should be on their future and a franchise quarterback, the now should be about the run game. With one of the worst run games in history, last year’s Dolphins really had nothing to be excited about. With rumors of an offense-heavy draft, running back is rumored to be one of their top choices but should it be?

This year’s crop of free-agent running backs includes some pretty big names. Guys like Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake more than likely will end up back with their current teams. Players like Kareem Hunt and Carlos Hyde could use a fresh start. However, Miami should have their eyes on an already established running back whose time seems to be up with his current situation, Melvin Gordon.

The Chargers seem to be moving on from Gordon refusing to invest in a running back who only hit 1,000 yards once in his five years. So why would the Dolphins want to bring in a running back who doesn’t hit the milestone tied to the position? Because Gordon hits one that’s far more important for an offense in transition, touchdowns.

Twice Gordon has hit double digits in rushing touchdowns. Two more times he got close with 8, and those times he also complied another 2-4 receiving touchdowns.

He’s a perfect fit for an offense that can’t seem to be consistent in the red zone. Getting in the end zone is key for an offense that will be starting over with a rookie within a year or two. If rumors are true, the Dolphins are going hard after a quarterback in this year’s draft. While the rookie might sit for a year, bringing in a 26-year old running back who can punch it in will take the pressure of scoring off the young QB,

If Melvin Gordon is looking for his next big contract, then Miami should come calling. Instead of wasting an early draft pick on an unproven rookie, or trading for a veteran who’s on the move the Dolphins could spend big on a playmaker. Gordon is available and wouldn’t compromise their offseason plans. If Miami is smart, they’re calling Gordon’s agent the moment free agency starts.
