Miami Dolphins: Is (Rumored) Brian Daboll The Right Fit?
The rumor mill is chugging along this time of year. Just like draft season, you should take everything you hear with doubt and curiosity. With that being said, one of the major rumors floating around is Brian Daboll is a favorite to land the vacant coaching job with the Miami Dolphins. Addressing all of these rumors, will he be the right fit?
Remember when the Miami Dolphins drafted Ryan Tannehill because they thought Mike Sherman could make it work? After all, Sherman was his offensive coordinator in college, so it was a match made in heaven right? Well, both Tannehill and the Dolphins struggled, and eventually, Sherman was let go. Fast forward to the 2022 HC search and Brian Daboll has the same ties to Tua Tagovailoa. Since the two were at Alabama together, Daboll has gone on to make a star out of Josh Allen, while Tua hasn’t lived up to the hype.
More Miami Dolphins: More Important HC or Coordinators?
Now there are also rumors that Daboll would bring in Bills QB coach Ken Dorsey for OC and Wink Martindale as DC. That only makes sense as a head coach you’d want to bring someone who helped fix your last QBs mistakes. While the Dolphins struggle with star power on offense, they’d inherit one of the top cap-friendly budgets going into free agency. Miami will be able to spend freely to make significant moves this offseason. Imagine a Dolphins offense that featured Tua Tagovailoa throwing the ball to Devante Adams or Calvin Ridley with Jaylen Waddle’s explosive talent.
That’ll be the key to the Miami Dolphins’ success. Schemes can take an okay quarterback and make him good, but talent has to be there to make him great. Don’t forget the Bills struggled to make Josh Allen work until they went out and got Stephon Diggs, Cole Beasley, and a few others in the draft. Building a consistent talent base that can stay healthy and on the field on game day is step #1 for whoever takes over as head coach.

Now Wink Martindale on the other hand is an interesting choice. The Baltimore Ravens spent a lot of time focused on rebuilding their offense to make Lamar Jackson successful. That’s not to say they didn’t put effort into defense, but the clear choice was the offense. With that mentality in place, the Ravens fell significantly off significantly on defense this year. In doing so, the team opted to move on from Martindale. However, that shouldn’t scare anyone off as the Ravens were in the top 10 in the 3 years prior. Whoever inherits coordinator duty this year will take over a defense that is filled with talent and can get turnovers.
Since these are only rumors, there’s no guarantee that any of these coaches will be on the sidelines for the Miami Dolphins this year. However, if it does play out you can expect the Dolphins to make some steady improvements over the course of the season.
