Miami Dolphins: It Doesn’t Matter Which QB They Draft

Miami Dolphins quarterback Josh Rosen

When it comes to the 2019 season, many fans of the Miami Dolphins are already looking ahead. Die-hards are still focused on every game, but the media has thrown the word “tank” around so much that people are beginning to believe it. On one side of the coin, the team trading away most of their top talent for an indulging amount of draft picks prove tanking. The other side of the coin is convinced that the team was never going to be competitive and got what they could to build for next year.

Both sides have been looking towards the future and how to fix a team starved for consistency and most believe the fix starts with the quarterback. It started with “tank for Tua” and now fans want everyone from Herbert to Fromm, to Burrow, to Hurts and seems like everyone has been linked to the Miami Dolphins’ plans going forward.

The fact of the matter is, it doesn’t matter who they draft at quarterback.

Take that in for a minute, think it over, then let go of your frustration. Truth be told you only have to look at this year’s roster to see what the outlook for Miami next season is. What any of the quarterbacks do in college won’t matter come April. It doesn’t matter if Tua is healthy, it doesn’t matter which qb is in the Heisman run, it doesn’t even matter if they win the National Championship whoever the Dolphins pick will be the right guy.

It could be a quarterback who quietly had a career defining season who flew under the radar and the Dolphins shock everyone. Their pick will be based on more than just game day footage and this year’s team is proof. Take a look at all the players who stepped up for Miami this year in a tough season.

Devante Parker was considered a bust, now is quietly having the best season of his career. Mike Gesicki wasn’t close to the talent he was brought in to be and is making his second year jump. Allen Hurns was a cast off who’s performing well enough to sign a two-year extension.

Then there’s the two undrafted rookies Nik Needham and Preston Williams. Before his injury Williams was a bright spot of the Dolphins offense. Needham was cut, signed, and is now starting after buckling down and getting serious about being a Dolphin. Both went from not getting their names called on draft day to starters on a young football team.

Maybe you could chalk it up to the lack of talent the Dolphins have this season, or you can give the coaching staff a slight amount of credit. From the outside looking in, the Dolphins look like football’s Bad News Bears, but the staff is quietly turning cast-aways into contributors.

They’re not doing it bringing in aging veterans and they’re not doing it through trading for subpar players. The Miami Dolphins actually have coaches who communicate what it takes to get to the next level in today’s NFL and the players are responding. It might not show up on tape, but the progress is there.

So whether it’s Joe Burrow, or Jake Fromm, or Tua Tagovailoa the Miami Dolphins will select whichever one is going to commit to pushing themselves past their limits. The next quarterback for the Miami Dolphins will be the guy who humbles himself after prior success or failure and gives the effort of someone trying to make the team. They won’t draft the cocky and arrogant player who goes out and wants to prove he’s the best player in the draft. Who wants to be the next great Dolphin and is willing to sacrifice to do so? Miami will make their choice and whoever is willing to develop into a franchise quarterback, not whoever thinks they should have the reins.
