Miami Dolphins: It Doesn’t Matter Who They Draft
Miami Dolphins fans are going nuts on social media over who they think the ‘Phins will take in this year’s draft. There’s a lot of talent coming out this year and Miami will get an upgrade no matter where they draft. More often than not most drafts have Miami upgrading their offense first round so who are the main players?
Ja’Marr Chase – WR
Arguably the best receiver coming out of this year’s draft. Most have him being off the table before Miami makes their pick but should he be there, they might run their card to the podium. Chase offers flexibility within the Dolphins’ offense. Playing opposite DeVante Parker, it would give Tua Tagovailoa a #1 type receiver on both sides of the football. If they line up both on the same side it would create a tough defensive match, especially putting the tight end Mike Gesicki on the other side. Chase would allow Miami a size and speed advantage in most cases.
Devonta Smith – WR
Smith would offer up a different dynamic. The Dolphins wouldn’t necessarily line him up as an outside/deep receiver but could use his speed on man coverage to get downfield. More than likely he’d be their underneath and sideline receiver. Devonta Smith was the prototype receiver the Patriots targeted for years and Brian Flores might see him as that type of playmaker.
He’s got the quickness to create separation and sure hands to make plays. Allowing Parker and, Will Fuller to clear the outside, Smith would be the quick strike receiver that would help march downfield, controlling the clock, and thus controlling the tempo of the game. When the situation calls for it, they could bump Preston Williams inside and have Smith play decoy for a Parker/Fuller mismatch.

Kyle Pitts – TE
Pitts would be another game-changer for the Dolphins. Again most mocks have him off the board come to the #6 pick, Miami would be lucky if he fell to them. Pitts would present yet another underneath threat for the Miami offense. If paired with Gesicki on two-tight end sets, defending teams would find it hard not to cheat forward and protect against the big-bodied tight ends steamrolling through the middle of their defense. By cheating forward, it would allow Parker and Fuller uneven man coverage matchups.
Penei Sewell – OL
While he’s not the flashy pick that most fans want to see Sewell is a top-tier offensive lineman. If Miami lands him, there’s an immediate upgrade to their already developing line. Three rookies came in last year and, while they struggled, proved their worth. Should any of them make the second-year leap, adding Sewell to the mix would only be a bonus? The Dolphins struggled in the run game last season and getting one of the best linemen in the draft could drastically change that.
The current Miami Dolphins regime certainly deserves a round of applause. Not only did they make pre-draft trades to allow them to continue to build for the future, but they also put them in a position to hold a considerable amount of cards on draft day. While they draft 6th overall, the first two picks should be quarterbacks, if not the first 4. Even if its only two, the Dolphins will land one of these 4 players and instantly upgrade their offense. They won’t have to play the “what if” card this year because each move has its own unique way of paying off.
