Miami Dolphins: Like It Or Not, Brian Flores Deserves Another Year

Biran Flores of the Miami Dolphins

The sky is often falling for Miami Dolphins fans on social media. More often than not, there’s a growing sense that the team needs to clean house and start over, again. Between the GM Chris Grier, the head coach Brian Flores, and the rest of the coaching staff they want everyone gone. Luckily for the team, the fans don’t make the call.

Even though Flores has made some questionable calls this season, fans need to suck it up and deal with a rough season. First and foremost, the team hasn’t really given up on Flores. They tend to break down after mental mistakes, but despite their shortcomings, they reset and play just as hard the next game. Then the cycle of mistakes happen and they’re out of games again. Now the past three games, they’ve found ways to overcome. Despite this young team all developing at the same time, they keep the grind going and that starts with coaching and leadership.

Then of course, if they do turn this season around, it shows they have the same drive that shocked the 2019 season after starting 0-7. With a solid strength of schedule remaining, there’s a good chance that Miami can make it back to 7-9 wins. It won’t be easy but it shows the Dolphins won’t go down without a fight. In today’s NFL, the coaching carousel is forever spinning and it’s hard to avoid losing seasons. If the Dolphins can get close to breaking even, it should buy Flores a little more time. He’s a smart coach who knows how to motivate his players, he just has too many developing at the same time.

And let’s not forget their cap situation for next season. As it stands right now, the Miami Dolphins are loaded up to spend freely in the offseason. While they have a solid nucleus of talent right now, explosive playmakers and leadership can be brought in this offseason. If all their current players are clicking at the same time, they’re a solid B- team. The problem is, they have a lot of young players who make mistakes and are rarely on the same page. If they go out and get guys who can elevate their already established talent and lead on field there’s no reason the players some are already calling “busts” won’t ball out.

The Miami Dolphins have a lot of “if only” type players on their roster. If only they’d stay healthy, or if they only n weren’t making mistakes they wouldn’t be as bad. They have the core group to succeed and Flores is a solid coach. If he and his players can get to the next level, they’d be a real threat in the AFC. With a 5-year/fully guaranteed contract, it wouldn’t make sense to get rid of him after year 3 when the team keeps clawing their way back in.

Between the covid year and bad break after bad break, Flores deserves a little slack as a first-time head coach. If the team is bad again next year despite the salary cap and picks they’ve had to work with, then you’ll know it’s time to hit the reset.
