Miami Dolphins: More Important, Coordinators or Head Coach?

Miami Dolphins owner and GM

Well, the Miami Dolphins are starting over … again. Right on schedule they hit the three-year mark and fired their head coach Brian Flores and are electing to hit the reset button. Along with their new coach, they’ll more than likely bring in both new offensive and defensive coordinators. Given their more recent history, which is more important?

Head Coach

Obviously, with their head coach, he’ll bring in his guys to draw up schemes on gameday. Miami has mixed their decisions up over the years bringing in both offensive and defensive guys to run the team and still have had no luck. Brian Flores was a defensive mind and it showed. The Miami defense was one of the better units in the league, but the Dolphins’ offense couldn’t get their feet under them and at times looked lost. With their latest round of candidates, they’ll need to find a guy who can balance both sides of the football as well as special teams.

Offensive Coordinator

As far as you can think back when was the last time the Miami Dolphins had a good offensive coordinator that pushed the team to their limits? It seems every year they’re turning over their OC and looking for the next guy to turn their fortunes around. All have seemed to fail miserably but that could be due to a lack of franchise quarterback. To be fair to the quarterbacks they’ve had, not a single one of these coaches has been able to get a work-in-progress QB to the next level either. Despite being a young QB, a good offensive coordinator can develop schemes that play to a quarterback’s strengths. No matter who is the head coach, they need to get an above-average OC.

Defensive Coordinator

Can Miami afford to take a step back on defense? Many see the Dolphins as having the talent to be elite on defense but if the next guy can’t bring the same schemes to the table or upgrade, they’ll be taking a step back. They’ll more than likely bring in an offensive coordinator to be the HC since that’s where Miami struggled. They have too much invested in Tua Tagovailoa to not see him succeed and it’s too early to give up on him now. With that being said, Miami will need a guy who can allow the defense to stay in control as the offense develops.

Each coaching vacancy is important going forward but Miami needs to find a way to upgrade all three. But if the next head coach doesn’t bring in the right staff, they’ll be hitting the same reset button 2-3 years from now just the same.
