Miami Dolphins: Nick Foles Should Be Their Offseason Priority

Nick Foles

This offseason will be a challenging one for the Miami Dolphins. They’re more than likely gutting their team right down to its core. They’re in full rebuild mode from the front office, right down to their practice squad. Stephen Ross is as fed up as fans with losing and seems to finally be coming to his senses about splashy moves. The team has gone all-in in the past and nothing seems to be working. So from here on out, the Dolphins are admitting defeat and understanding the “we can win, now” approach won’t work until you get a solid foundation of both talent and depth.

But, the Miami Dolphins can’t just ignore the offseason. If they’re truly going to rebuild they need someone who can step in and fill the ever-growing void at quarterback. Let’s face it, at his current contract, Ryan Tannehill won’t be back next season. So where do they find their next QB? They can’t just draft another rookie, throw him to the fire, and expect he has the confidence to lead a franchise and pick up the speed of the game. This draft class might be deep, but it has a few too many project quarterbacks.

Insert the surging Philadelphia Eagles.

The Dolphins and Eagles have a history of swapping players. Byron Maxwell, Kiko Alonso, Jay Ajayi, and if not for their trade up on draft day the Eagles might be without their star QB, Carson Wentz. Philadelphia would go on to win the Super Bowl in large part thanks to some of the deals made with the Miami Dolphins. Now, it’s time to return the favor. No, I don’t mean the Dolphins will have a Super Bowl caliber team, but with the Eagles often getting the better of the trades, a player to help turn the team around would be a great return.

Insert Nick Foles.

Foles will more than likely be a hot ticket item again this offseason so the Dolphins might have to go all-in still to get him, but a fair offer can be made. Nick Foles is a proven winner. His only losing season was with the then St Louis Rams who were in rebuild mode themselves. True, he couldn’t do much to will a rebuilding team to victory as a Ram, but the Dolphins have a few more weapons held over to make it work. He’s a smart QB who’s even smarter with the football. He’s come in many times and been asked to do the impossible and has stepped up to the plate. Miami needs a quarterback like Nick Foles.

If the bidding war starts and first-round picks are involved, the Dolphins should surely bow out. However, the Eagles and Dolphins were in talks the last offseason for Devante Parker. If Miami could work out a swap of Parker and a sixth and maybe a third next season, it wouldn’t be much of an overspend for a quarterback who will bridge the gap to whatever quarterback they draft.

Once they get a quarterback in place, they could move on to free agency in confidence. Foles would give them the pieces needed to focus on building depth on their offensive line as well revamping their defense that has a couple playmakers in place. Then again the Dolphins in true rebuild mode could move a playmaker like Reshad Jones to the Eagles as well. As much as it would sting to see the backbone of their defense move, Jones deserves the chance to play for a winner which might not be Miami in 2019. If they’re in true rebuild mode, they could look to shed his contract and do him the favor of sending him to a playoff caliber team. Dolphins fans might riot, but Jones is a playmaker who owes nothing to the team. Since they’re running low on options. Miami needs to find a way to get a deal done for Foles. Without a veteran quarterback to hold the line while a rookie develops, the Dolphins will have yet another quarterback, thrown to the wolves, who loses his confidence and never picks up the speed of the NFL. This is the Miami Dolphins’ only option.
