Miami Dolphins: Predicting Their Options at Quarterback
April isn’t too far away, but for fans of the Miami Dolphins, it can’t come soon enough. With double-digit draft picks and upwards of 100 million to spend in free agency, this could be their make or break offseason. Fans are crying for the next franchise quarterback, and Miami might finally oblige. The question is, which one and what will it take to get them?
Joe Burrow:
This is probably the most costly option. While he might be one of the best options to fit the Dolphins’ future, they’ll need to give at least 3 picks to move all the way up. To jump from 5th to first it could cost their mid-round pick in the first, a second-round pick and a 5th round pick.
By giving up that haul Miami would land a coveted quarterback and still have a second pick in the first, a pick in the second and pick in the fifth. Five picks in the first 5 rounds and 9 total. Cincinnati would get much-needed draft stock and still be able to take a quarterback like Justin Herbert who some say they truly want.
Tua Tagovailoa:
If Miami chooses not to bet the farm and Cincy demands to stay put, then the “tank for Tua” crowd might get their way. Another trade-up scenario as the Detroit Lions has their pre-draft smokescreen going. Miami would either have to give up one of their two firsts, a second this season or next, and a seventh or take on a bloated contract and float the option of a first and a late-round pick.
Justin Herbert:
Of the quarterbacks, Herbert is probably the one quarterback Miami could stick at 5 and take, but maybe not. Herbert has been slowly impressing these days and his pre-draft buzz is going strong. He could take some time to develop but the Dolphins have the luxury of low expectations. If they want to utilize their picks, Herbert could be their best bet.
Jalen Hurts:
Here’s the wildcard for Miami. Hurts might be projected in the second round right now, but there’s plenty of teams after Miami looking for their next signal-caller. Not many need a quarterback to rush out right now, but teams like the Panthers, Pats, Jags, Colts, and Bucs are tossups. With a deep class a QB, the draft can go on a run at quarterback leaving teams in panic mode. Miami could gamble and expect Hurts to be there at 18 or 26 but there’s no guarantee.
With Ryan Fitzpatrick expected back, the Dolphins finally wouldn’t have to thrust a rookie under center. By allowing the rookie to learn, the panic won’t be there. Miami has options this draft, but April is still 3 months away, and no one is showing their hand.
