Miami Dolphins Set To Make Major Strides On Offense This Offseason

Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins are set to begin a new era in their franchise. With the 5th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, they’re expected to take a quarterback of the future. The jury is still out on who that might be but all fingers are pointing to Tua Tagovailoa out of Alabama. While that’s a wise decision, there are still other holes the team must fill.

They’ll enter the draft stacked with picks. That’s more than enough to get gaps filled but let’s not forget free agency. The Dolphins could still use a wide receiver. The offensive line could use some help and while the defense played well, they may want to look into a pass rusher.

However, their main area of concern is who will take handoffs from their new quarterback? Will they go with the core they had last season with Kalen Ballage and Patrick Laird or will they look to a rookie or a veteran? If I’m the Dolphins and my rushing game was led by my 37-year old quarterback, I’m reaching out to Melvin Gordon.

While Gordon can still resign with the Los Angeles Chargers, many expect him to test the free-agent market. With Philip Rivers and the Chargers going their separate ways, Gordon may see the writing on the wall for the only team he’s ever played for and may want to find solace in either a winner or an up and coming team. This is where the Dolphins’ front office must do their jobs.

The other factor he will bring to their offense is his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. In 2019, Gordon caught 42 passes for 296 yards and one touchdown. But once again, he missed games while also sharing the workload.

As the primary back for the Dolphins, Gordon can showcase his skills the same he did in 2017 when he rushed for 1105 yards and caught 58 passes for 476 yards. This is exactly what the Dolphins need.

This is what the Dolphins should be thinking here. If they are to grab Tagovailoa, then he’s built with the same intangibles as Jackson. A great runner but Tau does have a better arm than Jackson. With Tua and Melvin Gordon in the backfield, the Dolphins will pose the same issues for defenses in which the Ravens did in 2019.

And better yet, Gordon is a better receiver than Ingram which the Dolphins and Tua can use as a security blanket for a team still searching for an offensive identify and doing what they must to protect a rookie signal-caller.

The Miami Dolphins’ offense in 2020 will be explosive. Tau can get the ball down the field. Add in Gordon plus the presence of DeVante Parker. Then, if the Dolphins are smart, they will go for WR Justin Jefferson out of LSU with the 18th pick. This first-round is all about the offensive side of the ball for Miami.

This year the division will not be as explosive. They could have a chance to take the reins here.
