Miami Dolphins: Smart Spending Should Mean More Wins

Miami Dolphins HC Brian Flores

The Miami Dolphins are all-in. This offseason is full of moves, and the Dolphins are accounting for a large portion of them. Oddly enough, there’s a large handful of quarterbacks starting with new teams and none of them will dress in Hard Rock Stadium, so far.

As it stands, the majority of the Dolphins moves haven’t been on offense. They’ve signed 10 free agents as of this post, 7 have been on defense so far. No surprise there as Brian Flores has plenty of experience on the defensive side of things. With how poorly they ranked in most defensive categories, clearly, this is a point of pride for the second-year head coach.

More Dolphins: 4 Biggest Obstacles to Overcome

With players like Kyle Van Noy, Kanu Grugier-Hill, and Elandon Roberts the linebacker unit got a whole lot stronger. The Dolphins already have Raekwon McMillian, Jerome Baker, Vince Biegel, Andrew Van Ginkel, Sam Eguavoen, Charles Harris, and Trent Harris. The unit was already crowded but a few stood out. By bringing in more competition, a unit that exceeded expectations despite low rankings can thrive.

Pass rushers are the biggest set back with the Dolphins. Bringing in Byron Jones to man the opposite side of the ball from Xavier Howard, they’ll have two of top paid cornerbacks in the league. If they both live up to their potential it was another upgraded unit. Pressure on the quarterback will make those two more successful.

Adding Shaq Lawson and Emmanuel Ogbah those pressure players are now in place. Sure, the team will still look to bring in a few playmakers in this year’s draft, but Miami will also have to put a lot of pieces together to fix a stumbling offense as well.

With 10 new players already on the roster and 14 picks in the draft, Miami could have almost 50% of the team revamped in one offseason. Depth has been the biggest obstacle to overcome so free-spending this offseason on quantity, not quality is a smart play.
