Miami Dolphins: The Mental Mistakes Have Got To Go

Miami Dolphins QB Jacoby Brissett

Miami Dolphins fans have already started with the finger-pointing and “fire everyone”. After what was a better than average season in 2020, this year is getting out of control fast. YOu can point fingers at everyone from GM Chris Grier to HC Brian Flores, to the dual OC’s. As a matter of fact, you can’t point to the entire organization top to bottom. However, there’s one thing that the Dolphins had exposed by Tampa Bay and it’s the mental mistakes that kill them.

First, while the Dolphins defense can’t be blamed entirely for their losses, it was time for the turnover streak to end. Too many times a ball carrier was stopped in his tracks, only. to get an extra 2-3 yards while defenders stood him up to punch the football out. It’s time to stop with the nonsense, put your shoulder down and secure the tackle. Sure one fumble looks great on your stat sheet, but when opponents constantly knock you around to keep drives going, that one fumble doesn’t matter.

Then there’s the offense. Jaylen Waddle was supposed to be the star of the offseason. He’s the sparkplug that can get the offense started. However, he’s making the rookie mistakes. Jacoby Brissett’s interception today was off the hands of Waddle that could’ve easily been a catch. He knows he can make plays and he knows he can make defenders miss, but you have to catch the ball before you can run with it. Look it in, secure the yards.

That’s the problem with this young Miami Dolphins team. They’re all passionate and want to make plays, but they’re not sticking to the fundamentals. It’s easy to say the sky is falling for the Dolphins right now, but there have been plenty of good plays and this team has some fight in them.

To be in a game with your backup QB starting, your two top WRs out, and be in within one touchdown late in the third quarter, on their home field is an accomplisment. Then the team was taken out of the game with mental mistakes. Brian Flores needs to find a way to get his young guys to play a cleaner game of football and we might be tallking differently about this Dolphins team. Until then, this year’s Miami Dolphins team will continue to be hard to watch.
