Miami Dolphins: Was Trading Devante Parker A Mistake?

Miami Dolphins vs Patriots

When the Miami Dolphins acquired wide receiver Tyreek Hill, the WR room changed dramatically. Hill was the playmaker the team had been looking for the past few seasons. Jaylen Waddle had an explosive rookie season and the duo should be tough on defenses. Don’t forget the Dolphins also signed Cedric Wilson so it was only a matter of time before Devante Parker would be moved. Miami heavily invested in the 7-year veteran but now they’ll move in a different direction. Miami traded Parker to the New England Patriots for peanuts, but will it come back to haunt them?

Most people will question why they’d want to trade a weapon with a division rival. However, the Dolphins don’t have much to fear with their two-star defensive backs Xavien Howard and Byron Jones so facing Devante Parker shouldn’t be a concern. Too bad they’re not the only team in their division. Giving the Patriots a weapon to unleash on the rest of their opponents could be where the trouble is. New England finished above Miami in the divisional standings, and Mac Jones impressed in 2021. Upgrading a divisional rival for virtually nothing in return is never a good idea.

Speaking of their return, the Miami Dolphins gave up Parker and a fifth-round pick, for a third-round pick … next year. They didn’t even get a pick in this year’s NFL Draft which is a head-scratcher. After trading their fifth pick this year, Miami now only has 4 picks in this year’s draft. With their current roster, its highly unlikely they’ll be able to move someone on draft day to free up more cap and recoup some of their picks. Essentially the Miami Dolphins have made moves this offseason they hope will put them over the top enough that the picks won’t matter. Now there’s plenty of draft picks next year, but if their moves don’t pay off this year the entire season will have been a waste. Most seasons, failing to make the Super Bowl or playoffs a team can develop their young talent. Miami will have minimal talent from this draft.

Losing Devante Parker won’t hurt the Miami Dolphins offense this year with the weapons they picked up.  Unfortuntely this move could bite them on the backside down the road. You can say Devante Parker has injury concerns, but its hard to believe a third round next year was the best they could get for him. Hopefully they invested enough this offseason that fans won’t even notice the risk they just took.
