Miami Dolphins: Will It Be Tau Tagovailoa or Jalen Hurts In NFL Draft?

Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins, just like the rest of the world are wondering the same thing–at what point did Jalen Hurts of the Oklahoma Sooners become a QB? In just four games, the Sooners’ QB has played himself into Heisman talk and a possible shot at being the No.1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. That’s a tall order when at one point, he seemed destined for an XFL job after graduation. But still, there is the other issue and his name is Tau Tagovailoa.

There’s no secret that the Dolphins will look at QB if they end up with any of the top two picks. However, before the College season started, the talk was all about Tag. Now, with Hurts lighting up the scoreboard, Nick Saban is not the only confused person walking the sidelines. The Dolphins’ brass has to be thinking there is no better position they would rather be in.

The Dolphins realized that Ryan Fitzpatrick was a huge mistake. And now they have given the keys to the season to Josh Rosen. That may prove to be just as fatal. This is still the NFL where anything can happen but do they really want magic to strike when the future of their franchise is throwing 60-yard bombs in Alabama or Oklahoma?

After his offensive display this past Saturday against Texas Tech, Hurts has firmly planted himself atop the leaderboard as a No.1 pick. Just so happens, his former teammates and the man who snatched his job is also there. Tagovailoa is leading the No. 2 ranked Crimson Tide with the same field presence that made Saban look the other way when Hurts said he wanted to transfer. So, what does that mean for the Miami Dolphins?

According to CMRS Dolphins beat writer Rick O’Donnell, the Dolphins’ issues can be traced back to more than the QB.

The problem defensively is the offense can’t give them a break. An offense that can’t stay on the field gives the defense no time to rest. But there’s a bright spot there as well. As bad as an 18/39 for 200 yards and zero TD’s look for quarterback Josh Rosen looks, he did make some good passes that were dropped by their receivers, a couple would’ve been touchdowns. Right now, their offense looks so terrible because of a the shift of lineman around due to injuries but also so much is timing.

If they do end up with the top pick in the draft, they will have a tough decision to make regarding their future. If Rosen shows signs of maturity and pulls out a few victories, what do they do? If Rosen reverts back to the sloppy player he was in Arizona and the Dolphins manage a 2-14 season or worse, what do they do? Usually, there is one clear cut QB in the top 3 slots. However, this year is proving to be quite different.

It appears, like Nick Saban, the Miami Dolphins can not make a bad decision here. You either get Tagovailoa who is mobile, accurate, and a winner or you get Hurts, who is mobile, accurate, and a winner. Right now, either of these players is better than what they have on their roster now.
