MLB: Joe Maddon expected to become the next skipper of the LA Angels
For several teams, there off season has begun. While players won’t be on the move, we may be seeing managers take new roles with new teams. The first managerial move that we will be seeing is regarding the Los Angeles Angels. After going 72-90 in the 2019 season, the Angels decided to move on from Brad Ausmus, who was the manager for one season. The feeling is that the reasoning for this move is solely on the fact that Maddon was free. According to Scott Miller of BR, Joe Maddon is expected to become the next manager of the Angels shortly after the interview this week.
Joe Maddon has been a manager in baseball for some time. Recently, he was the manager of the Chicago Cubs for five seasons. In those five years, he went 471-339 and several trips to the playoffs. He even lead the Cubs to a World Series win in 2016, breaking a 108 year drought. He began his playing career in 1975 with the California Angels. He would only end up playing with the Angels for four years. He decided to give up playing and focus on becoming a coach. He would end up working with the Angels organization for 31 years. He would then walk away from baseball for a number of years. In 2004, he was one of the finalists for the Boston Red Sox manger position. The Red Sox would end up going with Terry Francona. He would end up finding his way to Tampa Bay. On November 15,2005 he would be hired as the manager of the Tampa Bay Rays. He would end up winning the AL Pennant in 2008 with the Rays.
Overall, I like this move for the Angels. They are a hungry and want to be a force in the American League West. Also, Mike Trout is not going to get younger and you want to see him win the World Series before he hangs up the cleats. Joe Maddon is a proven manager and knows what it takes to win.
