MLB: New York Mets look to be acquiring Marcus Stroman

Marcus Stroman

We are a few days from the 2019 MLB trade deadline. While there hasn’t been any major moves, it seems the first major move has happened. According to MLB’s Jon Morosi, the New York Mets are set to acquire Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays.

As of this writing, it is unknown who the Mets are sending back to the Blue Jays. The feeling is maybe Noah Syndeergaard or Jason Vargas, but nothing has been confirmed yet. This doesn’t become a surprise for the Blue Jays as they were looking to move Stroman for the longest time. Stroman’s 2019 record isn’t the greatest. In 21 games, he has a 6-11 record with an ERA of 2.96. In his five years with Toronto, he has complied a record of 47-45 with an ERA of 3.76.

I know it won’t matter, but it could also be seen as a bit of a home coming for Stroman. He did grow up in Medford, Long Island. I don’t get this trade at all for a couple of reasons. Stroman doesn’t have the greatest numbers of all time. While it’s nice to get pitching help, I think there is more help needed for the Mets. This trade will be interesting to see for one major thing. Who did the Blue Jays get back? If it’s one of the guys mentioned above in Noah Syndeergaard or Jason Vargas, then it could get interesting. While Vargas wasn’t great, he was a serviceable guy for the end of a rotation. Noah Syndeergaard is someone who could have been the future of the Mets.

Being that the Mets are only 5.5 games behind in the Wild Card, I don’t suspect this to be the last move done by the Mets front office staff. If I were the Mets front office, I would try and get a hitter and help in the bullpen. By also making this move, it shows that the Mets are not giving up on this season.

If I had to give my overall take, it will be a wait and see type of trade as most of the news has yet to come out. It’s also worth mentioning that there is still a physical pending.
